In the spring of 1945 on a farm in Fruita CO., Clara Olsen asked Lloyd, her hubby, and go out do a number on Mike. He was ready to eat as Clara had been fattening up ol' Mike. Her Mom was coming for dinner, so Clara really wanted this to be a special dinner "just for Mom". After chasing Mike around the barnyard a few times, Lloyd finally scooped him up and took him to the chopping block. Mike seemed to have a sense of something drastic was about to happen, so he put up the struggle for his life. As Lloyd drew back the ax and swung, he managed to catch Mike on his head, taking most of it off, but leaving the brain stem. Not a good clean neck shot. Mike hit the dirt running, probably wondering what the hell hit him, as Lloyd stood by wondering how long Mike was going to run around like a chicken with his head chopped off. From that point on, nothing was ever quite the same.
Seems Mike's will to live caused Lloyd to reconsider the whole affair, so he and Clara took to feeding Mike a mixture of grain and water with the aid of an eye dropper. They kept Mike alive for the next 18 months, and in that period of time, before Lloyd put Mike in the circus circuit, he took Mike to the U. of Utah to let the scientific community have a look. It was determined that Lloyd had missed the jugular vein and clot formed preventing Mike from bleeding out. With his brain stem intact, Mike not only lived a healthy life but went from 3 to 8 lbs. in a year.
For the past 30 years, the folks in Fruita, Colorado have celebrated "Mike the Headless Chicken Festival" on the 1st of July every year.
Mike isn't the only chicken to have lived without his head, but I figured one headless chicken story was plenty. Besides, I want to move on to another morbid, unbelievable tale for your reading enjoyment.
Mike being fed his grain and water supplement.
